British Values

The Department of Education have  reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs"

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent strategy,  In our school these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways

Democracy

Many activities across the curriculum have outcomes that are voted for by the pupils including voting for choice of class rewards when awarded whole class / group rewards. Pupils use their voices to debate and make decisions.  Fairness and equity of opportunity are championed by our staff and unfairness is challenged

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school worship.  Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.  Visits from and to authorities such as the Police & Fire Service are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choice, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safety, through the provision of safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PHSE lessons.  Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect

A core element of our ethos focuses on respect which is one of our values for life.  During worship, PSHE, RE and informal daily discussions, mutual respect is reinforced and discussed.  Respect for others and their property is promoted through our classroom rules, as well as our behaviour policy.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We are a school where the importance of tolerance, understanding and kindness are taught with skill and dedication and integrated into every aspect of school life.  For example through Christian values themed worship; through focusing and raising money for charities in UK and overseas aid; through the development of pupils to lead and care for one another; through bringing parents together to meet and learn as part of our school community; through emphasising the importance of knowing about and celebrating each other's differences in order to remove stereotypes and barriers.

Modern British Values are interwoven into the daily lives of our school's learning community and are naturally reflected through everything we do.
