How Science is taught

Intent

At Brimscombe, we want all children to become confident young Scientists by taking a practical and inquisitive approach to Science. We aim to prepare children with the key skills, to flourish in an ever-changing world.

Implementation

The views of the staff and children are at the centre of our Science teaching and learning here at Brimscombe. Pupil voice surveys are carried out each term to assess children’s enjoyment of the subject as well as highlighting any potential concerns they have. With this feedback in mind, teachers carefully plan Science lessons which are sequential and build on the children’s previous knowledge and ideas. Any potential barriers to children's learning are considered and children regularly record their work and ideas in a variety of ways. Science lessons are, where possible, practical and allow our children to experience the joy of discovery. In order to further raise engagement within the subject, teachers try and promote the pupils Science capital through extra-curricular clubs, school trips and arranging Science visitors to the school.

The impact.

It is important for our learners to develop key skills and retain important information. Teachers use TAPS focused assessments to assess specific working scientifically skills and support is put in place to support pupils in lessons if required. Leaders and teachers assess the impact of the learning in a variety of ways. Leaders observe lessons each term as well as monitoring the Science work carried out in class. Feedback and development points are then provided in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for our learners. Pupil voice surveys are also carried out each term to highlight the children’s views around the subject. Teachers carry out a range of rich formative assessment strategies with a particular focus on questioning through the use of concept cartoons. Teachers use this assessment to track children’s progress within each topic as well as to inform their planning.
