Learning about arteries, veins and capillaries
Our science is helping us to learn more about how blood is transported around the body.
We have been learning how to describe the different vessels and their function in our body. We know that arteries take oxygenated blood away from the heart around the body and veins bring the deoxygenated blood back.
Our experiment helped us to understand how important it is to keep our arteries from restricting through poor diet and lack of exercise. We took paper cups with different sized holes in the bottom, each representing arteries of different sizes. We put water in and timed how long it took the water to drain out. We noticed that the wider the hole, the quicker the water drained. This is like blood - the more healthy our arteries, the more efficiently the blood can travel around our body.
