How writing is taught...
At Brimscombe we use the Talk for Writing approach to teaching English across the Whole School. We have adapted this approach to meet the needs of mixed age classes.
Pupils use story mapping to learn the 'model text.' They follow the cycle of Imitation, adaptation and Invention to create their own narratives. A similar approach is used more when teaching non fiction writing.
Role play, discussion is encouraged to support writing and speaking & listening is part of the writing process.
Writing is heavily supported by reading. Children read many different examples of the text before their writing to give them a rich experience of the structure, style and vocabulary. of the genre.
At the end of each block of writing pupils complete a "hot task" which allows them and the teacher to assess their progress and is an opportunity for pupils to 'publish their writing.
Our writing curriculum is planned to give our pupils experience of a broad range of genres and styles. In addition to teaching writing these text types, learners are supported with regular spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Below you can download our writing overview which shows which writing genres your child will be learning and how grammar, punctuation and spelling progresses through the school.
